Round 7* – Canning City FC vs Kingsley Westside FC

Reserves

CCFC 3 – 0 KWFC *(Forfeit)

Firsts

CCFC 2 – 1 KWFC

With the First Team having already wrapped up the league and Reserve Side already being given the 3 points as Kingsley had to forfeit, the final game of the season was all about the Firsts proving why they were top of the league. In the background however, Bassendean Caledonian FC were playing against Fremantle City FC in a game that would decide who won the Reserve league. Our boys in blue came down to support Fremantle as anything but a loss would see them jump Bassendean to top spot.

As the First Teams set up the pitch for the first time all season the Ressies sent back live updates on the Freo vs Bassendean match. 1-0 then 2-0 to Freo. Bassendean pulled one back and at halftime the scores sat at 2-1. The second half starts, 3-1, 4-1, 5-1 to Freo. By then the game was all but over, even a late goal from Bassendean couldn’t save them and at the final whistle, the scores sat at 5-2. Freo had won, Bassendean had lost, and the Canning City Reserves ran onto the pitch to celebrate winning the league.

With the Reserve league decided there was only one thing left to do. Put Kingsley in their place and then celebrate both winning the game and winning the league. The Firsts walked onto the pitch to a guard of honour and took their place on the pitch as champions. However, after the whistle blew, it would be a rough start for the Canning boys as they went 1-0 down in the 17th minute when a free kick was put under the wall into the bottom corner. With the wind and the score against them the boys in blue were still able to create some great chances, but at the half time whistle they went into the change rooms a goal down.

Coming on for the second half, the wind at their backs, confidence in themselves and each other, they had 45 minutes to turn the tie around. The battle continued in the second half though with the wind it was clear that Canning had the upper hand, however they were yet to find the breakthrough up until the 70th minute. 5 minutes after coming on, Noah Paget connects with a cross from Paul Van Dongen, squeezing in front of his marker to smash a volley from the centre of the box into the roof of the netting. 1-1 and the goal they boys needed to lift and push on for the win. 10 minutes later, in the 80th minute that winning goal would come when Paul VD, once again created trouble for the Kingsley defence pouncing onto a flicked header from Greg Sharland, poking the ball past the keeper with his head from close range. 2-1 to the home team with only 10 minutes to play. The first team pushed on and just about locked the ball in the Kingsley half until the final whistle, leaving the final score at 2-1, the first team winning their final game of the season to make their Champion celebrations that much sweeter.
