Canning v Gosnells – Frank Longstaff Trophy Leg 1

Canning City took a trip down to Walter Padbury Oval to face off against Gosnells City in a highly anticipated match. Upon arrival players and spectators alike viewed the “Frank Longstaff” Trophy created by the two clubs to honour the Mighty Frank Longstaff who mentored both teams during his coaching career.

1st Half
Gosnells came out as the stronger side having a goal disallowed due to the offside flag 5 minutes into the game. Canning pushed forward but Gosnells won the ball in midfield and started their counter attack, Kannu took down the Gosnells player and received a yellow card for his trouble. Canning City pushed forward and thanks to an effort from club captain Callum Roberts, it was 1-0 to Canning City. Gosnells City were awarded a free kick in a dangerous area, their captain Apelgren stepped up and put it just over the bar. Canning continued to put the pressure on the home team as they put a ball into the box but nobody was inside to get the final touch.

Gosnell’s Ireland found his way past 3 Canning City defenders but encountered Canning’s goalkeeper Stonebridge, too hard to get past. Gosnells won the ball back with Pereira putting the ball past Stonebridge and finding the corner of the net, 1-1 on the stroke of half time!

2nd Half
Second half started off strong for Gosnells who won a free kick just outside the box, Apelgren stepped up again, this time finding the top corner and putting his team 2-1 in front, just 5 minutes into the second half. Canning responded with Roberts making a terrific run but scuffing his shot and hitting Adams right in the chest. Ireland was then yellow carded for an irrational tackle on Kannu. Canning striker Gamble found his way through the Gosnells defence and slotted past Adams, equalising for the away team! Gosnells won a corner, it was played in and dropped to the left wing, Gosnells again put it across the box and it fell to Francis who slid it past Stonebridge to yet again put his team ahead, 3-2 in favour of Gosnells City.

Cannings Levitt dived into a Gosnells player hoping to win the ball, gaining a yellow card for his effort. Gosnells put the ball in but up stepped Cannings goalkeeper punching it away comfortably. Canning win the ball in the middle of the park after Stonebridge’s punch out,Trevisiol picked up the ball and broke away, playing the ball past the defence of Gosnells into the path of Roberts who was then clumsily taken down by Adams ….. penalty to Canning City in the dying minutes of the game! Cartwright stepped up to take the penally hoping to equalize, he side foots the ball but Gosnell’s Goalkeeper managed to comfortably collect the ball and save the day.
